The No. 13 NC State baseball team remained unbeaten Saturday afternoon at U.S Bank Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a 6-0 win over Purdue.
Junior left-handed pitcher Nick Swiney was the man of the hour all game long, breezing through the Boiler Makers (6-3) lineup with ease. The Huntersville native pitched a career-high eight innings of shutout baseball striking out a career-high 15 batters, while only allowing one hit.
Leading the way offensively for NC State (10-0) were junior first baseman Austin Murr and freshman shortstop Jose Torres, who each had two hits on the day. The Wolfpack had 11 hits total as a team. Its biggest hit of the day was a three-run home run from junior second baseman J.T. Jarrett in the seventh inning.
NC State opened the scoring in the third inning, as Murr tripled to right field to score senior designated hitter Brad Debo. The Wolfpack doubled that lead in the fifth inning when junior pinch hitter David Vasquez perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt that junior catcher Patrick Bailey was able to score on.
The Wolfpack exploded with four runs in the seventh inning to put the game to rest. Sophomore center fielder Tyler McDonough drove in Murr on a sacrifice fly to center field. Later in the inning, Jarrett crushed a three-run home run, his first of the season to left field to give the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead.
While the offense erupted in the seventh, Swiney continued to deal. At one point in the game, Swiney retired 19 consecutive batters. In his eight innings pitched, his pitch count totaled 98 pitches.
Senior right-handed pitcher Dalton Feeney came into pitch in the ninth inning in relief of Swiney, and pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
NC State will look to complete a perfect weekend in Minneapolis Sunday night when it plays Minnesota. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be streamed live on the Big Ten Network plus.
