The NC State baseball team did not start its Easter weekend series at Virginia Tech on the right foot, falling 10-2 at English Field in Blacksburg, Virginia Thursday.
The Wolfpack (21-5, 7-3 ACC) notched two unearned runs in the game’s first inning and tallied just three hits in the loss to the Hokies (11-13, 5-5 ACC). Sophomore starting pitcher Michael Bienlien had a rough go of it for the second game in a row, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits in just 2.1 innings pitched.
The Pack struck first in this one, scoring two unearned runs on a throwing error and a bunt single from senior right fielder Brock Deatherage in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. NC State put itself in a favorable position by getting its first two batters on base with a walk from senior center fielder Josh McLain and a double from junior left fielder Brett Kinneman.
The success did not last long for the Wolfpack, however, as the Hokies exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning on a trio of doubles, an RBI groundout, a wild pitch and a throwing error. Virginia Tech added a run each in the fourth and eighth innings to close out the scoring.
Game two of the series goes Saturday in Blacksburg at 4 p.m.
