The NC State baseball team got its first marquee win of the season on the road Friday night, topping Clemson 4-0 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Junior left fielder Brett Kinneman launched his NCAA-leading 11th home run of the year in the first inning to get the Wolfpack (16-3, 3-1 ACC) scoring started, as the Pack shutout the mighty Tigers (16-2, 3-1 ACC).
Sophomore righty Michael Bienlien (2-0, 0.68 ERA) started the game on the mound for NC State, his first start of the season after battling through some injuries, and quieted the Clemson bats through five innings of work. Bienlien didn’t allow a run, while allowing five hits and striking out three batters.
Redshirt junior Nolan Clenney (2-0, 1.72 ERA), freshman Nick Swiney (2-0, 1.04 ERA) and sophomore Kent Klyman (1-0, 0.00 ERA) completed the shutout for the Wolfpack, with Klyman picking up his third save of the year after throwing 2.1 hitless innings.
The NC State pitchers were able to shut down a potent Tigers offense, only allowing six hits. The Pack also did a great job handling Clemson superstar lefty Seth Beer, a likely first round MLB Draft pick, who went 0 for 4 on the night.
To go along with Kinneman’s first-inning blast, the Pack added two runs in the fifth inning and one in the eighth. Senior outfielder Josh McLain had an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth, followed by an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Will Wilson.
In the eighth inning, freshman second baseman J.T. Jarrett delivered an insurance run with an RBI single to left field, plating sophomore catcher Brad Debo.
Kinneman, Wilson and Jarrett led the offensive charge for NC State, each picking up two hits and one RBI. Senior outfielder Brock Deatherage also contributed for the Pack, going 1 for 2 with a run and two walks.
The Pack and the Tigers will be back in action for game two of the series Saturday evening, with NC State looking to seal its second straight ACC series win to start the conference slate.
