Laura Kowohl ties for 19th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Cherokee Country Club on Sept. 18. Hosted by Tennessee, NC State finished in 10th place in its second round.
The NC State women’s golf team will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday to participate in the three-day LSU Tiger Classic at the University Club.
The Tiger Classic will be the Wolfpack’s fourth tournament in 2018 after posting solid outings in its previous three. In February, NC State competed in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate and finished fourth in both.
The most recent challenge came during the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, where the team finished 11-over-par and with a middle-of-the-road tie for ninth out of 17 teams. UCLA won the tournament with an impressive 17-under-par total of 847, followed by the host Wildcats at 856 (-8) and Texas Longhorns at 860 (-4).
Senior Cecily Overbey and junior India Clyburn continued to shine for the Wolfpack when they finished in the top 30 out of 95 individual players in Tucson. Overbey finished with a final round 73 (+1) to finish at 223 (+7) to tie for 30th, while Clyburn posted a final round 74 (+2) to finish with an overall of 218 (+2) and a tie for 14th.
Statistically, Clyburn has been the top performer in the spring with an impressive 18-hole average of 74.55 and a tie for ninth place already to her credit. Junior Laura Kowohl continues to be a steady leader along with Clyburn and Overbey.
Kowohl has an 18-hole average of 74.77 and recorded a tied for third finish, her best of the spring, at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in mid-February.
The field at the Tiger Classic will be one of the more competitive the Wolfpack has seen all year, with the LSU Tigers and ACC rival Virginia headlining the event.
The Wolfpack finished tied for fourth with a 16-over-par performance in the same tournament last year, and will look to veterans like Overbey and Clyburn to draw on their positive experiences and make a potential run for first in the latest edition of the Tiger Classic.
