Beginning July 1, students, employees and visitors may purchase a virtual parking pass for on-campus parking lots.
A virtual parking pass does not require additional tags or permits to be stuck on a dashboard, but instead is provided by virtual plate recognition technology that scans a car’s license plate to validate parking.
The license plate recognition software will be used by cameras on parking enforcement vehicles that will scan license plates and refer to license plate numbers in the database to determine if a vehicle is parked in the correct location.
The application process for a virtual parking pass is practically all online which saves time in waiting to pick up a pass or waiting in line to receive one.
The new technology also allows for multiple vehicles to be registered from the same parking pass. Because of this, only one vehicle per pass can be parked on campus in a four-hour time frame.
Vehicle owners will have to park in a front facing position so that their license plates can be scanned. Owners that wish to back in or pull through parking spaces can purchase a vanity front license plate from transportation.
Virtual permits and license plate recognition technology will be addressed at transportation town halls Thursday at 10 a.m. in the south theater of the College of Veterinary Medicine Building and April 5 at 3 p.m. in room 4140 Talley Student Union.
