After posting a season-high score of 196.575 last week, NC State gymnastics followed it up, defeating William & Mary by a score of 195.725-193.325 this Saturday when it hosted its annual Sweetheart Meet at Reynolds Coliseum.
After the first rotation, the No. 27 ranked Wolfpack led the Tribe 48.975 to 48.250. Sophomore Drew Grantham led the way with a score of 9.850 on the vault, as NC State took the top five scores in the event.
The Wolfpack followed up its strong vault performance with an equal effort on the uneven bars, which saw junior Caitlyn Fillard take the high score with 9.825, tying her career high. The Pack had the top four highest scores in this event and led 97.650-96.250 at the end of the second rotation.
Grantham followed up her performance on vault the by matching her season high of 9.875 on the balance beam. This was the closest matchup of the day as the Tribe took two of the top five scores in the matchup, but still couldn’t close the gap and left the Wolfpack leading 146.450-144.880.
The Pack had its best performance of the night, and the season, on the floor with a team total of 49.275. NC State’s highest score came from junior Alexa Phillips with a 9.900. Following behind Phillips was senior Chelsea Knight with an 8.875. The team as a whole did not score lower than 9.800 on floor.
Phillips set a season high on floor with a 9.900, the highest of the day, while Senior Mackenzie Itcush achieved a personal-best 9.850 on floor, beating her previous high of 9.825.
In the all-around performance, the Pack finished in the top three with Grantham, Fillard and Knight, respectively.
The win against the Tribe was the fifth win at home this season and the Wolfpack has three more home games before heading to Ohio State.
NC State is only one spot out of first in the EAGL and is looking forward to build on its momentum from this match. With three home games left before the conference championship, the Pack hopes to finish in first and win its first conference championship since 2013.
The Wolfpack’s next meet is at home in an EAGL matchup against New Hampshire on Friday at 7 p.m.
