The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report of the previous academic year has been released, including statistics and numbers of the amount of reported instances of Clery Act Crimes that occurred over the past academic year.
The Clery Act requires colleges to publish an annual report by Oct. 1 disclosing events, statistics and campus security policy statements to the members of the university.
In the 2017-18 academic year, there was an increase in the number of reported instances of fondling. In 2016, there were five reported incidents whereas in 2017, there were 22 reports of fondling. In addition, there were 18 reported instances of rape, as well as 29 reports of stalking, eight reports of domestic violence and 20 reports of dating violence.
The report also included a statement from Chancellor Randy Woodson discussing relationship and interpersonal violence on campus, and how misconduct will not be tolerated on NC State’s campus. In the statement, Woodson urged students to report such acts to University Police, voiced his support for people who have not come to that decision and stated that there are options for survivors to report incidents while maintaining confidentiality.
“Therefore, certain university officials, who by virtue of their positions have significant responsibility for student and campus activities and are identified as Campus Security Authorities and/or Responsible Employees, are required to report to University Police when they are notified of crimes involving relationship and interpersonal violence,” Woodson said in the statement. “These reports can be made while protecting the victim’s identity and preserving their right to pursue any further action.”
On- and off-campus resources were listed in the report as a resource for students who are overcoming substance abuse disorders or relationship or interpersonal violence.
In the report, there were no incidences of fires in residence halls, and there were decreases in the amounts of arrests and disciplinary referrals due to liquor law violations.
