Former Head Coach Mark Gottfried walks back to the locker room with freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. after his last game as the coach of the Wolfpack on March 7, 2017 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Wolfpack was defeated by Clemson 75-61 during the first round of the 2017 ACC Men's Basketball Tournament.
More information about NC State surfaced in an ongoing federal college basketball trial in New York Wednesday morning, as first reported by Adam Zagoria.
Carrie Doyle, the senior associate athletics director for compliance at NC State, took the stand for the second day in a row with memos about former NC State men’s basketball coach Mark Gottfried and his relationship with Eric Leak, a former NC State football player with a history of illegally giving benefits to Wolfpack athletes.
The memo also referenced AAU coach Desmond Eastmond, who allegedly received money from sports agent Andy Miller. NC State disassociated itself with Miller in 2012, due to Miller’s relationship with Eastmond and Adidas.
The memo said that “Mark (Gottfried) said he was told by the Huntington Prep coach that Eric Leak was Dennis’ financial advisor,” and that “Gottfried needed to be able to recruit talented young men who may or may not have a relationship/ties with either Desmond Eastmond or Eric Leak.”
Doyle did say she did not know about former NC State point guard Dennis Smith Jr.’s father taking a $40,000 payment for Smith to play at NC State.
