Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has yet again done the impossible by successfully guiding the confirmation process of Justice Kavanaugh through the goalpost. The Kentucky Senator, with decisive leadership and true courage, saved the institution of the Senate as well as the foundation of the Republic.
For four tiresome weeks, Senate Democrats both on and off the Judiciary Committee smeared, slammed and ate away the reputation of the accomplished Brett Kavanaugh in a blatant “scorched earth” strategy in an attempt to win a seat on the Supreme Court.
Twenty-three minutes after President Donald Trump announced the nomination of then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a speech to the public announced he would oppose the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh “…with everything I have.” The Great Purge launched against Judge Kavanaugh and his family would even make Joseph Stalin blush.
This idea that any Democrat (excluding Joe Manchin) would support Brett Kavanaugh if only they had “more time to investigate” is a blatant lie. As Lindsey Graham summarized in his now viral tirade, from the very beginning the Democrats opposed this nominee with the hope of winning the White House in 2020.
Historically, Judicial nominees have been confirmed with overwhelming majorities in the Senate, regardless of the nominee’s affiliation. Even as recently as 1993, the nomination of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in a 96-3 vote. Even Republican Senator Chuck Grassley (who is the current Judiciary Committee Chairman) voted in support of Justice Ginsburg.
The Democratic Party in the United States today operates on a blatant double standard. The Senate Democrats that persecute an accomplished jurist like Brett Kavanaugh with little to no evidence are the same Senators that revere Ted Kennedy as the “Lion of the Senate” (despite him plunging his Oldsmobile into the Chappaquiddick River and killing Mary Jo Kopechne).
Recent polling across the board shows that the smear campaign from the Democratic Party has backfired. 538 Politics now gives the Democrats a 1-in-5 chance of winning back the United States Senate. The lead Democrats held over Republicans in the race for the House has also shrunk, according to 538 Politics.
My fellow Republicans, take a moment to enjoy this victory. Thank you, President Donald Trump and thank you Senator Mitch McConnell for your leadership. Thank you, Senator Lindsey Graham for your oratory skills and thank you Senators Tillis and Burr. Lastly, to the Senate Democrats, thanks for playing.
