NC State men’s basketball head coach Kevin Keatts announced Monday that Roy Roberson has been hired to fill the program’s assistant coaching vacancy.
After spending six years as an assistant coach in high school and college, Roberson spent three seasons as the head coach at Holy Cross from 2003-2006. He compiled a 57-28 record, won a VISBA Division III State Championship in 2005 and was named The News and AdvanceArea Coach of the Year and VISBA Coach of the Year.
“I’ve known Roy for a long time and I’m excited to add him to our basketball staff,” Keatts said in an official statement from NC State Athletics. “As a coach, he’s won a lot of games, but it is his passion for his players and program that has always impressed me. He has a great energy and knowledge of the game and will be a great teacher and mentor for our student-athletes.”
Roberson then took over as the head coach at E.C. Glass, where he had previously served as an assistant. He spent 11 seasons there from 2007-18. In 2010-11, he won the Seminole District Championship and Region III Division 4 Championship and was named the named the Seminole District Coach of the Year, Region III Coach of the Year and The News and Advance Area Coach of the Year.
Over the past eight seasons with Roberson at the helm, E.C. Glass went 80-20, went to two final fours and two final eights and had 33 players earn All-District recognition.
“Coach Keatts and I have been friends for close to 30 years and I’m beyond excited to have the opportunity to join the staff of one of the brightest coaches in the business,” Roberson told NC State Athletics. “There is no doubt Coach Keatts is a rising star in the profession and I’m excited to help him build NC State into one of the premier programs in college basketball. I’ve been a high school coach for a long time and have always been intrigued by the college game and this felt like a great opportunity to make the transition.”
Roberson fills the coaching vacancy created earlier this year when A.W. Hamilton left the Wolfpack to take Eastern Kentucky’s head coaching job.
