The women’s tennis team clinched a win in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Cary Tennis Park this morning. The team defeated Boston College 4-0 and hopes to take its momentum into tomorrow’s match against No. 3 Duke at 9 a.m . Coach Hans Olsen was proud of his team’s opening performance.
“I thought the girls competed really well,” Olsen said. “The doubles were really competitive. It came down to a tie breaker. We were down to match point a couple of times but the girls kept fighting for it. It was a nice momentum builder going into the singles.”
After Joelle Kissell and Ashley Miller won the first doubles match 8-6, No. 18-ranked doubles duo Sanaa Bhambri and Sandhya Nagaraj squeaked out a 9-8 win after a hard-fought battle with Boston College’s top two. Once securing the doubles point, Kissell took the first singles point, winning 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot. No. 31-ranked Bhambri then brought the match to a 3-0 affair after winning 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Finally, Tatiana Illova wrapped up the victory for the Pack, winning 6-3, 7-5 against No. 114-ranked Katarina Gajic.
Olsen and his squad are thrilled to get their second shot at Duke tomorrow morning.
“I’m really excited,” Olsen said. “It’s a great ACC match-up and a great opportunity for us. We’ve got to be excited for it.”
