Monday morning at 8:44 there was a break in a gas main located on the corner of Dan Allen and Faucette Drive. Campus Police stated that flying debris from nearby construction site struck a hole in the pipe causing a leak. By 8:47 authorities arrived on the scene.
In an interview with WRAL, university spokesman Keith Nichols reported that Dan Allen Drive and Faucette Drive west of Dan Allen were closed in order to quickly repair the damage. For a brief time, the Weaver Laboratory Building was evacuated as a precaution.
The public was blocked from the area in order to prevent as many injuries as possible.
The damage done to the pipe caused a gas leak. Fortunately no fire was started.
To prevent an excessive gas leakage, the faucet controlling the flow of gas to the pipe was shut off immediately.
Authorities allowed students back in the area shortly after the leak was secured. No injuries of any kind have been reported.
The damage done to the pipe was not serious. Nevertheless, Campus Police, the Raleigh Fire Department, and several other safety squads reported to the scene.
According to Lieutenant Ellis from the Campus Police, it is always better to go in with everything.
”Little leaks can turn into big leaks,” said Ellis.
The precautions necessary for such an emergency require authorities to isolate the area entirely. The best way to prevent injuries is by setting boundaries several yards away from the site and keeping pedestrians out well out of range of danger.
By 9:30 am the hole in the pipe had been plugged.
N.C. State spokeswoman Christine Klein reported to WRAL that by 10:30 am, Dan Allen Drive was reopened. Faucette Drive was not expected to be opened until later in the day.
The pipe was repaired and usual traffic resumed by yesterday afternoon.
