Two UNC students organized the Dozen Doughnut Dash — an event inspired by N.C . State’s Krispy Kreme Challenge.
Ty Fenton and Bobby Mook raised about $11,000 Saturday for UNC’s on-campus cancer research center: the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. The two hoped their event would become an annual one, much like the Krispy Kreme Challenge, which hosted 6,000 participants last year.
Fenton and Mook organized their run so it would not conflict with the Challenge.
“We both had the idea that if 6,000 people wanted to do this race over in Raleigh for charity, then if we imitated the race and did on the opposite side of the year, there wouldn’t be any conflict,” Mook said.
Co-chairs of the Challenge — Alyson Harding, Brian Parham and Emily Tucker — met Tuesday morning to discuss how to handle the press regarding a response to UNC’s run. They released a statement through email, but Tucker said they would not agree to an interview either by phone or in person.
This year’s Krispy Kreme Challenge will be held Feb. 4, 2012.
