Raleigh police responded to a reported robbery at Capital Bank at 2127 Clark Avenue around 10:40 a.m . Friday morning, according to Jim Sughrue, director of public affairs for RPD. The male suspect was apprehended by the Court of North Carolina.
“Initial reports indicate a male suspect fled on foot after completing the robbery. A suspect has been detained by responding officers. Additional details will be provided when they’re available,” Sughrue said.
The initial information RPD had implied the suspect had a weapon, so they treated the situation as if the individual was armed and dangerous, according to Sughrue.
“After we apprehended him and processed the scene, it was determined that he had a toy hand gun in his possession, but no true weapon,” he said.
The campus Wolf Alert system notified students of the robbery. Text message alerts, audible siren alerts and emails were all sent out.
“It all transpired in just a matter of a couple minutes,” Sughrue said. “By the time he entered campus, we made the decision to execute our audible warning system and by the time the audible warning system activated, we were making the apprehension. So at that point it was determined that we needed to get information out via our other methods, so we sent an all-clear message out with the e-mail and text messages.”
The suspect, 35-year-old Corey Eric Sterling, has been charged with one count of common law robbery, according to Sughrue.
