UPDATE: A section of an old pipe under the road fell out due to large traffic flow, causing a “very substantial break in the pipe,” according to Erik Hall, a plant engineer for Facilities Operations.
“The road will flex a little bit,” Hall said. “The piping in the ground was at least 1970’s vintage.”
Hall said when they shut down that section, the service was also shut down in Talley Student Center and Carmichael Gymnasium.
However, Hall said the piping has been replaced.
“The underground piping failure — that caused the issue — has been resolved [by our Utilities Distribution Shop]. What hasn’t been resolved is the damage to the road. The road will be repaved [at a later time] when we don’t have so much traffic on campus. [The Utilities Distribution Shop] replaced all the old piping and valves, and corrected any construction deficiencies that were in there. We did this — instead of just fixing the pipe — because we don’t want to open that road again anytime soon,” Hall said.
Service was restored at 4 p.m . Wednesday, according to Hall.
UPDATE: According to Kim Paylor , transit manager, Wolfline service to Carmichael Gymnasium has been restored.
A water main break Wednesday on Cates Avenue near Talley Student Center and Carmichael Gymnasium has shut down or affected several campus operations.
According to Kelley Brackett , public communications specialist for Campus Enterprises, Talley Student Center food service is temporarily closed. Students can check the Campus Enterprises Facebook page or Twitter for details as the day progresses and an e-minder alert will go out when service resumes.
Until further notice, there will be no Wolfline or CAT bus service to the Carmichael Gymnasium stops on either side of the street, according to Kim Paylor , transit manager for NCSU Transportation. Transportation asks that students use the Jeter Drive/Dunn Avenue stop as a replacement for the Carmichael stop. CAT buses will not be serve this area, and their closest stop will be Western Boulevard/ Avent Ferry.
There is currently no water at Carmichael Complex, according to Laura Karpf , assistant director for University Recreation.
Calls to Facilities Operations could not be answered immediately because the main personnel were out in the field working on fixing the water main break.
