In October 14’s printing of the Technician, the viewpoint the staff revealed is remarkably misguiding and anti-inclusive. The view claims that the Student Senate’s N.C . Equality Act “goes against its original intentions of encouraging diversity of points of view throughout our state.” This is absolutely false. A simple review of the “summary of purpose” reveals that the bill seeks to “support all N.C . State students.” What about that is contradictory? In no way does this bill constrict anyone’s ability to diversely express him or herself; rather, its objective is to publicly condemn discriminatory practices against any N.C . State student.
By making this claim, Technician staff is essentially condoning discriminatory acts, language and practices. Is this what we want at our University? The last time I checked, discrimination was not an acceptable form of diversity. Why are we even entertaining the idea that a diverse population is one that includes discrimination? To me and many other N.C . State students, this is offensive and flat out unacceptable.
Another false claim made in Technician’s view is that the Senate is attempting to “act as the surrogate opinion for the student body.” I would very much like to know where this information has been collected. I have read the bill multiple times and nowhere in its literature does it say anything about speaking for the entire student body. It does, however, state the following: “Resolved: the Student Government of North Carolina State University does not support the proposed constitutional amendment …” Nowhere in that text does the Senate claim that they are speaking on behalf of the entire University. Nowhere.
My view is that Friday’s printing of the Technician is an embarrassment to the entire University. In the paper’s view, it states, “This bill focuses so much on the liberal opinions of the students that it leaves out a more conservative view.” Again, another misguiding statement. This bill has absolutely nothing to do with being liberal or conservative; however, it has everything to do with showing support for all students who make this University what it is. I suggest that the Technician issue an apology to the entire student population for publicly condemning a bill that hopes to show support for its students in a time where we most need it.
