It is one thing to acknowledge and accept the fact that individuals on this campus have a right to express themselves, however, it is entirely different for the University to endorse those views by including them in a publication for incoming students. I know as a gay man, I would have serious reservations about the environment around me if I received anything from the University like the Brick that had homophobic slurs in it. It is time for us as a University to stop excusing the phobic actions of others as an expression of free speech, and instead find ways to show people that as a community, we expect all of our members to respect each other. By including this photo, we are doing nothing more than embracing the tradition of discrimination and not free expression. In advocating for removing the photo, Dr. Tracey Ray is showing all the students here that N.C . State is a setting where diversity is embraced, supported and nurtured. I believe she should be commended.
