Crews are working to repair a leak at N.C . State’s nuclear reactor, but campus officials say it’s not a threat to public safety.
The leak is located in the liner of the reactor water cooler, according to Mick Kulikowski , assistant director of News Services.
Andrew Cook, manager of engineering and operations of the nuclear reactor program, forwarded all requests for information to the University’s News Services.
According to Kulikowski , the 10-gallon-per-hour leak from the liner does not pose a threat to the public and a service crew is working to mend the problem. Under regulations from the U.S . Nuclear Regulatory Commission, leaks of 350 gallons per hour must be reported, but Kulikowski said NCSU reported the “miniscule leak” to ensure transparency.
Unlike other nuclear reactors, the PULSTAR reactor at the University is very small compared to commercial ones, producing a maximum of 1 megawatt according to nuclear reactor program website. That’s enough to power a small appliance like a coffee maker.
