On a rainy Saturday evening in Carter-Finley Stadium, the Wolfpack handed South Alabama its first loss in program history, 35-13, predominantly through the passing game.
But interestingly enough, the running backs turned in the most impressive receiving performances for N.C . State.
The Jaguars had never lost a game coming into the contest, and proved to be a formidable foe for the Pack throughout the game.
State looked strong on the first drive. Following a 46-yard kickoff return from senior wide receiver T.J . Graham, the Pack had a nine-play, 54-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard touchdown run by junior running back James Washington.
Following that drive, State would score again from one yard out. Senior full back Taylor Gentry caught the ball on the right side of the field to put the Pack up 14-3, where the score would stand at halftime.
Gentry would strike again in the third quarter in the form of a five-yard pass to the right side after an interception by junior safety Brandan Bishop started the drive from the Jaguars’ 29-yard line.
Both Washington and senior running back Curtis Underwood made plays in the passing game, but Underwood received an 18-yard pass that put the Pack up 28-10 late in the third quarter.
At the end of the game, the Pack still suffered from the same issues it has in the first two games of the year. State fumbled the ball four times on offense, but saw its defense finish with two interceptions and a fumble recovery of its own.
While redshirt quarterback Mike Glennon finished the game with 274 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, he was also sacked four times and fumbled the ball on a bad snap in the second half.
Glennon connected on a pass with Graham in the fourth quarter for a 67-yard touchdown to bring the score to 35-13, where it would remain for the rest of the game.
State will have a short amount of time to fix some of those mistakes as it travels to Cincinnati to face off with the Bearcats from the University of Cincinnati on Thursday night at 8 p.m .
