Mr. Lucas’ article on H 854, also known as Women’s Right to Know, fails to provide quality information and in general is deplorable. His argument that “this bill makes the triumph of reason all but impossible” is a sad attempt at rationalizing his hatred of this law. I will attempt to address each of his morally reprehensible arguments. While Mr. Lucas feels that having all the information available regarding abortions is important, and potentially seeing and hearing a fetal heartbeat creates “unfounded levels of emotional attachment,” which leads to an irrational decision being made, I strongly disagree. Making irrational and emotional decisions occurs when one is not presented with all of the facts surrounding a situation. To disregard sights and sounds that are contrary to your belief is to disregard reason. If abortion is a rational and reasonable decision, and a decision that could “morally” be reached at any conclusion, then that will happen regardless of what information may come along. Mr. Lucas also poses that women have to be ready to have a child, and even then children are not for every adult. I wholeheartedly agree, however fundamentally I believe abortion is not the answer to that problem. Lucas argues, “The emotional weight that this bill imposes will impede the life-course of many women,” a place he says a direction their lives have no business going. If a woman feels she isn’t ready to have children, then she should not be having sex.
