Duke University President Richard Brodhead, Provost Sally Kornbluth and Chancellor for Health Affairs A. Eugene Washington wrote a statement on Monday that rejects the new North Carolina law that limits rights of the LGBT community. In their statement, university leaders addressed House Bill 2, saying that Duke University does not tolerate acts of discrimination and that they will continue to work to make Duke an inclusive environment. Leaders also addressed economic issues within the university because of HB2. Concerns over the “bathroom bill” have caused prospective students to question attending a university in a state with such discriminatory laws and is keeping some alumni and staff from further involvement with the university.
