Friday, Provost Warwick Arden announced Mark Hoversten as the new dean of the College of Design.
Hoversten comes from the University of Idaho, where has served as dean of the College of Art and Architecture since 2007. His position at NC State will go into effect on July 1.
“My vision for success at the College of Design includes building upon the already strong academic programs that foster student success and contribute to a resilient and enlightened world,” Hoversten said, according to NC State News. “I look forward to bringing a student-focused approach to leadership, and to developing interdisciplinary initiatives that engage students in real-world experiences.”
Before his work at the University of Idaho, Hoversten taught at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas as well as being the school’s coordinator of landscape architecture and planning.
Hoversten has also worked extensively in the private sector, such as his management of the land planning division of the Howard Hughes Corporation.
Hoversten’s awards in design include the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award for the Western U.S. Region in 2010, and he was named an outstanding educator by the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture in 2006.
Hoversten holds a doctorate in landscape planning from Lincoln University in New Zealand and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of New Mexico.
Hoversten’s selection follows the retirement of Marvin Malecha, who served as dean of the College of Design for 21 years.
