Let’s be clear: Sometimes there will be a Daily Tar Hell and sometimes there won’t. Each year the decision is up to the Technician’s editor-in-chief and their staff. This year, after a lot of thought, we decided to bring back The Daily Tar Hell — just not the one people might have expected.
This year we decided to write The Daily Tar Hell because we at the Technician believe that satire — good satire — is a powerful thing.
We wanted to reinvent the DTH as what it should represent rather than what it came to represent in past years.
Sexism, racism and homophobia were the common theme of jokes during the 1980s and ‘90s editions of the DTH, which is why, in recent years, some editors have strayed away from it.
We realized it didn’t have to be this way. This year, we wanted to create a marriage of tradition and progression. We saw that we could write jokes about things other than UNC-Chapel Hill’s liberal arts programs and academic scandals. We could “punch up” instead of “punching down.”
Not only could we make jokes about the Tar Heels, but we could also make fun of the Wolfpack.
To make a joke, you’ve got to be able to take a joke. Sometimes it’s important to make fun of yourself.
So, we hope while reading today’s spoof issue, you’re able to laugh just as much at NC State as you do UNC-Chapel Hill.
