This weekend the NC State swimming and diving team earned wins in 10 events and recorded a handful of record-breaking times at the Carolina College Invite at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The Wolfpack faced off against several teams including the Tar Heels, Towson, Duke, JMU, William & Mary, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion.
On day one of the competition, the Pack came out strong in the women’s 500 freestyle, with freshman Allie Fogleman finishing second with a time of 4:50.49 and freshman Anna Jahns finishing third with a time of 4:52.16.
In the men’s 500 freestyle, freshman Trey Poff came in first with a time of 4:24.90, and freshman Mason Revis came in third place with a time of 4:27.98.
In the men’s individual medley, junior Geoffrey Carter won the men’s 200 individual medley after stopping the clock at 1:48.93, while freshman Quinlan Stuart finished second with a time of 1:49.81.
Day two of the competition was even better for the Pack when junior Natalie Labonge broke the school record and the 15th-fastest time in the nation in the women’s 100 butterfly, as she took the top spot in the overall standings after touching the wall at 52.47.
Also in the butterfly, senior Mariah Hamil came in second behind her teammate for a career-best time of 54.59 and in the men’s butterfly, freshman Jon Burkett took first place as he touched the wall at 46.63, which stands as a career-best and the third-fastest time in school history.
Jahns placed second in the women’s 400 individual medley with a time of 4:20.56, which stands as a top-10 mark in program history. Fogleman also earned a top-five finish in the event, as she finished fourth with a mark of 4:28.12. Both times were career-best performances.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, NC State took first, second and third, with Carter finishing first with a career-best time of 54.55, freshman Daniel Graber finishing second with a time of 54.74 and Stuart taking third with a time of 55.64.
In the women’s 100 breaststroke, junior Maddie Witzke finished second in the event with a time of 1:02.25, which got her the third-fastest time in school history.
In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Caroline Estep came in first place for the women with a time of 54.84, while the men took three of the four top spots. Burkett took first place with a time of 47.48, freshman Parker Campbell took second with a time of 49.20 and freshman Justin Moore took fourth with a time of 49.92.
In the last day of the competition, the Wolfpack continued to shine when Estep won the women’s 200 backstroke with a career-best time of 1:58.61 and Campbell won the men’s 200 backstroke with a career-best 1:46.74.
NC State also took the top two spots in both the men’s and women’s 1,650 freestyle, and all had career-best times. For the men, Revis won with a time of 15:29.62 and Poff took second with 15:39.39. For the women, Fogleman won with a time of 16:34.30 and Jahns placed second with a mark of 16:34.77.
For the 200 breaststroke, Witzke finished second for the women with a career-best and program top-10 time of 2:17.42. For the men, Carter took first with a mark of 1:59.76, Graber finished third with a time of 2:01.24 and Stuart finished fourth with a time of 2:01.26.
Next, the Wolfpack will compete in the 2016 ACC Women’s Swimming/Men’s and Women’s Diving Championships, which will run Feb. 17 – 20 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.
