Republican candidate Ted Cruz beat Donald Trump by more than 3 percentage points, with 27.7 percent, in Monday night’s Iowa caucuses. Cruz is a tea party favorite who played up his conservative ideals and appealed to Christian evangelicals. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton held a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders, holding a lead of less than 1 percent.
