Evolving … Growing … Adding value! These were the thoughts that came to mind as I drove down Hillsborough Street after being away from Raleigh for four years. I have a present appreciation, from a past perspective, of the improvements made along the street since my years as an undergrad.
Like my parents, I am an alumnus of NC State, Class of 2011. I had the opportunity to serve as one of the first interns of the Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation during my undergrad career. Having experienced the planning, vision and first stages of Phase I of the Hillsborough Street Streetscape Renovation Project, I must say it is now amazing site to see!
The transformation that has taken place on Hillsborough Street is exciting, vibrant and inviting! It reminds me of a college atmosphere, yet a growing urban metropolitan community. The street appears to be keeping its traditions while adapting to a rapidly growing city living environment. From the roundabouts to the expanded sidewalks, landscape and the plethora of restaurant and shops, I certainly would have loved to have the Hillsborough Street of now when I was an undergrad.
Hillsborough Street has continued to develop and push its potential to new heights. Now as a young professional, I am more motivated to return and enjoy the community and university environment. I look forward to seeing the street’s transformation after the Phase II renovations are complete and the effect it has on the street’s continued redevelopment. As we used to say, “Live It Up! Hillsborough Street.”
Sincerely,
Darius Godwin
