The North Carolina trial that determined whether or not the revisions to North Carolina’s voter ID laws, which mandate that voters must show a form of ID before voting, ended Monday. Defendants in the case say that showing an ID before voting will prevent voting fraud, but opponents say voter fraud is not a legitimate issue, and it’s really a stab at disenfranchising minority groups. It’s unclear when a ruling will come, but it is likely that the defendants will win the case. Since the 2010 elections, North Carolina and 21 other states have added voting restrictions. U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder will review thousands of pages of documents and evaluate testimony and arguments before making his decision.
