Durham bar and music venue The Pinhook has recently encountered a heavy financial burden. A previous co-owner made a sales-tax mistake, which also went unnoticed by a previous accountant. According to its crowdfunding website, current full-time owner Kym Register explained that the previous co-owner miscalculated the venue’s finances.
During The Pinhook’s first five years of operation, Register said that they had “never paid sales tax. Ever. I was floored to learn that that as a result we owe $80,000 in back taxes.”
To combat this problem, Register decided to start a crowdfunding website on “Fundly,” and local college radio stations WKNC 88.1, WXYC 89.3, WXDU 88.7 and WUAG 103.1 have all joined in the effort to keep the venue alive.
The “Save the Pinhook” concert series, hosted by the college radio stations, is part of this massive effort. On Wednesday, WKNC presented the first show in the four night series. The stacked lineup that night included the highly-danceable headliners, Sylvan Esso, and bluegrass maestros, The Chatham County Line.
The third and fourth shows of the series are tonight and tomorrow night, and they will continue the theme of surprise lineups. At these shows you can expect to hear some of North Carolina’s best musical acts. Tickets to the first two shows sold out, so if you are trying to buy tickets to the shows this week, act quickly!
