In an editorial published Monday in UNC-Chapel Hill’s newspaper, the editorial board called for the board of trustees to rename an on-campus residence hall that is named after former North Carolina Gov. Charles Aycock and UNC alumnus. Although he was a proponent of public education and built hundreds of schools, he pushed a white supremacy campaign in the early 1900s that aimed to disenfranchise black voters. Last year, the board started a 16-year initiative to rename other buildings named after white supremacists. The editorial states, “We cannot wait 16 years. We have a solemn duty to constantly re-examine our history and the people in it we choose to honor.”
