Film director and producer Abderrahmane Sissako’s film “Timbuktu” was released in 2014. It portrays Sissako’s take on the jihadist siege of the Malian city in 2012. During this time, a band of Islamic fundamentalists, who originated from France, Saudi Arabia, Libya and other nations, announced its list of prohibitions through a megaphone, which included no music, no sports and no socializing. Their audience was Timbuktu inhabitants, and many of them refused to obey the band’s demands.
