The NC State women’s soccer team will continue its historic season and travel to Palo Alto, California to face Pepperdine in the second round of the NCAA Championship Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Wolfpack (10-8-2, 4-5-1 ACC) defeated Big Ten champion Minnesota on penalty kicks in the first round last week to win its first NCAA Championship game since 1995 and advance to the second round.
“We just went in really relaxed and played well,” head coach Tim Santoro told NC State Athletics. “And I don’t expect that to change this week.”
The No. 19 Waves (12-4-4, 7-1-1 WCC) won its opening round on penalty kicks as well, defeating No. 24 California. In the regular season, Pepperdine finished first in the West Coast Conference. The team is currently ranked 38th in RPI while the Wolfpack is ranked 45th.
The two teams faced off for the first time in history in 2015 while playing in the Torero Classic in San Diego, when Pepperdine defeated NC State 1-0 in overtime.
If the Pack comes out victorious, it would represent the program’s first trip to the third round of the tournament since 1995, when it lost 4-3 to SMU. A win would also be the squad’s 11th of the year, which is the most since 2006.
The Waves have multiple threats on the offensive end that the Wolfpack backline will need to keep in check, including First Team All-Conference selection Rylee Baisden and Second-Team All-Conference selection Bri Visalli. Baisden has scored six goals and six assists for a team-high 18 points while Visalli has logged five goals and one assist.
The winner of the match will face either Stanford or Santa Clara in the third round Sunday.
