I wish that I found Donald Trump’s remarks in his “60 Minutes” interview regarding reproductive rights shocking, but I did not. I am all too used to hearing our president-elect attack my right to bodily autonomy. However, as a North Carolina resident, this interview hit particularly close to home.
In this interview, Trump acknowledged that, should he nominate an anti-choice justice to the Supreme Court as he intends to do, decisions regarding abortion rights would return to the states, forcing millions of women to travel out of state to receive abortion care. North Carolina has no protection of abortion rights in our state constitution. Furthermore, the NC General Assembly has been consistently hostile towards reproductive rights. If Roe v. Wadewere overturned, I have no reason to believe a woman’s essential right to choose would be upheld in our state. Trump acknowledges and accepts all of this.
Here’s what Trump refuses to acknowledge: overturning Roe v. Wade would absolutely not put an end to abortion. It would only put an end to safe, legal abortion in states that choose to outlaw it. We have seen time and time again, in the U.S. and in countries around the world, that making abortion illegal only leads women to resort to unsafe and possibly lethal abortions. Of course, this begs the question: how can people like Trump call themselves “pro-life” if they knowingly advocate for policies that would force women without the means to travel to another state to carry a risky pregnancy to term, self-abort or seek out an unsafe and illegal abortion?
Not only would overturning Roe v. Wade endanger women living in states that are hostile toward abortion rights (over half of states, according to the Guttmacher Institute), but it would also undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and of the rule of law in our land. For over 40 years, the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld Roe v. Wade, despite numerous attempts by anti-abortion advocates to tear it down. Deciding whether or not to have an abortion is an incredibly personal decision. It isn’t a choice that I would wish upon any woman, but the Supreme Court has ruled over and over again that it is, in fact, a woman’s choice to make. In order to be a legitimate leader of the United States, Trump must respect the decision of the Supreme Court and leave Roe v. Wade intact.
