According to NC State officials, an email account with information of nearly 38,000 people was hacked several weeks ago.
The university learned about the data breach on June 3. The email account contained a file from 2013, which included students’ names, mailing addresses, university ID numbers and Social Security Numbers.
Only students that were enrolled at NC State in 2013 could be affected by this breach.
The email received by students who were attending the university in 2013 said, “[t]here is no evidence that any personal data has been retrieved or misused or that fraud has been committed using this information.”
The university reports that this hacking was the result of a “sophisticated phishing scam.”
NC State has taken steps to avoid future data breaches, including requiring university officials affected by the incident to change their account credentials and requiring additional information security protocols.
Additionally, the university will be providing affected individuals with credit monitoring service for one year to mitigate the risk.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
