On Monday, NC State administrators learned that Camille Murris, 2011 alumna of NC State’s SKEMA Business School was among those killed in the terrorist attack in Nice, France on Bastille Day, July 14. The attack claimed 84 lives and wounded 202 others.
The attack in Nice, as well as the political unrest in Turkey, has created concern for NC State’s deep international connections in those countries.
Chancellor Randy Woodson said in a statement that there are no NC State students currently studying abroad in Turkey but several students and alumni are participating in a service trip there. Woodson confirmed that they have been in contact with the university and are safe.
“On behalf of the NC State community, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims, their families and friends,” Woodson said.
In an interview with NC State News, one of Murris’ former classmates described her as “a bubbly young woman, always smiling and ready for adventure.”
Murris was very active in Esperanza, a charity run by SKEMA students that helps children in developing countries by renovating schools, promoting physical education programs and fundraising for efforts to prevent and treat AIDS, according to NC State News.
Members of all SKEMA campuses held a moment of silence on Monday, July 18 in honor of Murris’ life.
Woodson urged students to take care of themselves by seeking out loved ones or professionals and helping others who may be struggling to process the events as well.
“As we all strive to process this and other recent national and international tragedies, please remember to take care of yourselves, and do not hesitate to talk with any of the many caring professionals here for you,” Woodson said. “Please, also look out for members of our community who might be hurting.”
