NC State Student Government declared two demands this week, in response to concerns in the leadership of the Counseling Center and the structure of Multicultural Student Affairs.
The former Multicultural Student Affairs Coordinator Peter “PJ” Adams was dismissed from the university as an at-will employee. Adams previously ensured that staff would be trained to address the diverse communities, and students expressed a desire for similar support from his interim and successor.
The Student Government proposed Tuesday that a replacement for Adams be found by Feb. 1, 2017 and for the name of Adams’ interim to be released.
Many students of color feel that Multicultural Student Affairs is not best structured to support diverse communities, according to the demands. The demands claim that, because various employees of the department have moved in the past, it has been difficult for students to build an effective support system with the staff. Members of the Asian and Pacific Islander community have explicitly expressed a need for representation since January.
In response, Student Government aims to present a strategic plan by the end of fall for the department’s units of student affairs to be assimilated into a single unit of cross-cultural student affairs. Rather than provide faculty for specific communities, Student Government demands that staff in the department implement training to allow each faculty member to provide cross-cultural support.
“I want to be the principal advocate and champion for all of our students,” said Paul Nolan, student body president and a senior studying materials science and engineering. “Our diverse population as a community is struggling right now, and I’m committed to finding the best approach in creating the very best solutions to address these issues going forward.”
