UPDATE:
The gas at the intersection of Hillsborough and Rosemary Streets was shut off at 12:55, according to Presida Montanez, spokesperson for PSNC Energy who manages gas lines for the area.
Montanez said that preliminary estimations are that the leak was caused by a third party. No further information is available on the cause at this time.
“If it’s a populated area they close it off as a cautionary measure,” Montanez said. “It’s always better to be safe.”
Raleigh Fire Department will do a walkthrough to make sure that everything is secure and that there is no risk to the public.
Stanhope Apartments chose not to evacuate residents, despite initial reports to the contrary. About 30 people were evacuated from nearby businesses as a precaution, but have been allowed to return.
