As part of a new program introduced by University Recreation, NC State students will soon be able to act out their favorite board and video games in real life.
NC State Intramural Sports will host these life-size events, where students can bring to life games such as “Hungry Hungry Hippos,” “Pokemon Go” and “Mario Kart,” according to a press release from Assistant Director of Sports Programs Ben Strunk.
The first game is a life-size playing of “Hungry, Hungry Hippos,” with registration continuing through Wednesday and played on Friday on courts two and three of the Carmichael Gym, according to Strunk. Students will be put into groups of four and will compete against three other teams while taking turns gathering plastic balls in a basket.
“We believe students are looking for unique recreational experiences outside of the traditional season-long team sports,” Strunk said. “Our unique new special events provide a one-day premier experience for NC State students of all athletic interest and ability levels.”
During the “Pokemon Go Team Challenge,” teams of two to four players will walk around Central Campus in search of PokeStops. The participants will attempt to catch Pokemon and upload photos to Instagram to win prizes, according to Strunk. Registration for this event ends Monday, and the challenge begins on the same day at Miller Fields.
The final game is “Mario Kart,” in which participants will speed walk around “Luigi Raceway” — the Centennial Campus Oval — while wearing cardboard boxes made to resemble their favorite carts from “Mario Kart.” Racers will use bananas, star power and shells in an effort to be the first to cross the finish line, according to Strunk. Registration for “Mario Kart” will be open from Monday to Sept. 19, and the event will take place on Sept. 23.
