The NC State men’s tennis team had a winning opening weekend at the J.W. Isenhour tennis center against Elon and the Citadel.
The Wolfpack (3-0, 0-0 ACC), ranked 40th, opened its spring season on fire despite the cold weather that forced the team to play indoors.
The Wolfpack is a young team after the loss of seniors Robbie Mudge, Beck Bond and Austin Powell at the conclusion of last spring season. Even with a young roster, the team finished the 2015 fall season with 33 wins and for the second year in a row, State picked up the ITA Carolina Regional Doubles title.
NC State added four freshmen to the lineup: Chris Mikrovas and Georgiy Malyshev competed for the Pack in the fall season, and twin freshmen Ivan and Igor Saveljic joined the roster for the beginning of the spring schedule with redshirt freshman Michael Ogden.
“The twins are doing really well,” junior Nick Horton said. “They haven’t lost a match, and they’re coping really well. I really like them; they’re great guys.”
The men started out strong again, winning their 12th home opener as well as continuing their undefeated record against Elon.
State took the doubles point against Elon and dominated in singles to take the day in a 5-2 decision Sunday. The upperclassmen rocked the singles competition with Simon Norenius and Thomas Weigel winning in straight sets. Saveljic won in his collegiate debut in singles and scored the winning point for the Wolfpack.
The morning and afternoon matchups against the Citadel Monday were shutout 7-0 wins for the Pack.
“It was pretty weird playing the same team twice,” Horton said. “It was the first time we have ever done that; it just kind of worked out that way. I felt it was quite competitive in the singles, but I feel like we took care of business thoroughly in doubles.”
Clinching the doubles point early in both games, NC State came out to another quick start against Citadel in the afternoon match. Singles proved to be more difficult after already playing a morning match.
“Both sets of my singles were quite tough,” Horton said. “I managed to pick it up in the second set of the singles.”
Horton was not the only one in his battle with Matthew Henson; the twins both had hard-fought wins against the Citadel’s Jackson Pride and Nicholas Bradley.
“We have to get the guys in the mindset that our bodies are going to be hurting the rest of the season,” Horton said. “We’re going to be playing tired almost every day, and that’s why this doubleheader was a good start.”
NC State will travel to Chapel Hill for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The team will face Drake and Indiana or UNC-Chapel Hill.
