Nine monuments at Oakwood Cemetery, including former North Carolina Gov. Charles Aycock’s grave were spray-painted with anti-racist comments like “white supremacist,” “slavery,” “KKK” and “Not Heroes.” Other high-ranking officers had their graves defaced as well. The cemetery is asking for $23,000 in donations to offset the damage. The cemetery hasn’t been vandalized since the 1980s, according to Oakwood cemetery’s executive director.
