Acting Education Secretary John King announced two new proposals Tuesday that would expand the Pell Grant program, the biggest pot of federal money for students with financial need, and add a bonus for students taking a heavier course load. Currently, students can only be eligible for two semesters of Pell grants. The Year-round Pell proposed Tuesday would add a third academic session of Pell eligibility. Also proposed is a reward of as much as $300 for students who take on more than 15 hours in a semester to encourage more students to try to complete their degrees sooner.
