In its first ACC matchup of the season, the NC State women’s basketball team came away with a huge 70-62 victory over the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Thursday night in Reynolds Coliseum.
Prior to this matchup against the Wolfpack (11-3, 1-0 ACC), the Irish (12-2, 0-1 ACC) held an impressive 47-1 record against ACC teams since first joining the conference prior to the 2013-14 season, with the only other loss coming to Miami in 2015.
Seniors Dominique Wilson and Miah Spencer accounted for half the team’s scoring with 18 and 17 points, respectively. One of the deciding factors of the game was free throws, as the Pack shot an efficient 14 of 15 from the charity stripe while Notre Dame converted merely 4 of 11.
The Wolfpack jumped out to a quick 20-13 advantage over the Irish and headed to halftime with a 34-28 lead. The Pack proceeded to dominate the third quarter, outscoring Notre Dame 17-6 to hold a commanding 51-34 lead going into the final quarter. The Irish mounted a furious comeback, shooting 61.1 percent from the field and scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter, but the Wolfpack stopped it in its tracks with the help of a perfect 9 of 9 free-throw shooting.
NC State looks to build off the momentum as it travels to Tallahassee to take on No. 7 Florida State Monday at 7 p.m.
