Senior goalkeeper Logan Erb scans the field during the game against Queens at Dail Soccer Field on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025. Erb allowed no goals while playing 90 minutes. NC State beat Queens 2-0.
Through four games, NC State men’s soccer has not let up a goal.
It may seem trivial. It’s not like the Pack has matched up against a gauntlet of opponents to start the season. Dominant wins over Queens, Wofford and FIU, plus a draw versus North Carolina — probably not your cue to go all in.
But the four clean sheets are indicative of head coach Marc Hubbard’s defensive vision for the team. And the key piece of that vision, senior goalkeeper Logan Erb, has been on fire.
Erb spent his first two collegiate seasons with the San Diego State Aztecs, having a breakout season his sophomore year. After allowing just 18 goals in 1410 minutes on the pitch, he was named All-PAC-12 Second Team.
In his first season with the Wolfpack in 2024, he split goalkeeping duties with now-graduated Enzo Carvalho, starting just two of the first seven games. But by the end of the season, Erb secured the starting job and helped lead the team to a Sweet 16 appearance.
The Houston, Texas native attended the Houston Dynamo Academy, an MLS academy, before deciding to enter the college ranks. Feeling undervalued in the recruiting process, Erb is cherishing his recent success.
“It’s everything to me,” Erb said. “I came from an MLS Academy, and the goal was always to go pro. And I think I was a pretty overlooked keeper. I mean, I had a standout year my sophomore year, eyes were on me, and then you split time your third year as a junior, and everyone’s like ‘Oh that was a fluke year.’”
On the stat sheet, Erb has just six saves this season. But his role on the team extends further than just laying out.
“Everyone will look at the saves and say, ‘Oh, you don’t make many saves,” Erb said. “It’s not about that. It’s about keeping clean sheets, about keeping guys organized. I would be over the moon happy to have 17 clean sheets and zero saves.”
Erb’s mentality has certainly caught the attention of his head coach.
“You’re going to be asked to compete every single day, regardless of your position, regardless of what you did last game,” Hubbard said. “The chip on the shoulder mentality is a good one, and it’s a good message for guys that aren’t playing as much right now, or guys that are younger. That if you continue to persevere and work hard, you’ll get your shot. And that’s what [Erb] has done.”
The last time the Pack started the season with four clean sheets was 2014. In the fifth game of that season, NC State let up a goal. The data is incomplete for the last time the Pack opened up the season with five straight clean sheets, dating back to 1950. The record for most shutouts in a season is 12.
Erb has done something which had not been done in a decade, and if all goes well in NC State’s next matchup against Stenson Wednesday night, he will have done something which had not been done in who knows how long.
On a national level, the NCAA record for most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in men’s Division I soccer is 1,318:26, set by Michigan State’s Avery Steinlage in 2008. Erb is still a far cry away, with a current streak of 413:38 minutes, including a short period of time from the Pack’s last game of the 2024 season.
