Much like the seasons, fashion trends come and go. Just as we adjust to the changing weather, we adapt to our style to reflect new color palettes, fabrics and aesthetics.
The fashion industry continuously creates new trends to keep consumers invested. With this constant turnover also comes the never-ending race to remain in touch with the latest fads. As fall 2025 rapidly approaches, there has already been talk of what will be “hot or not.”
This season, a slightly disheveled take on maximalism is leading the trends. A pop of red, messy hair and layered looks are the key to constructing creative, distinctive outfits. This comes as a rebellious departure from last year’s slicked-back, minimalist “clean girl” aesthetic that dominated social media.
The use of the phrase “frazzled English woman fall,” coined by the Australian Fashion magazine RUSSH, has been embraced on TikTok as inspiration for this emerging movement. With Zooey Deschanel, Bridget Jones and Keira Knightley as the faces of the movement, the aesthetic channels the charm of an early 2000s romcom.
Fall has long been associated with deep, warm tones, but accentuating this palette with a pop of bright red has recently surged in popularity. Influencer and interior designer Taylor Simon helped push along this trend with her promotion of “The Unexpected Red Theory.”
Originating in interior design, the theory suggests that a seemingly random pop of red is often the missing link that ties a room together. While it has suddenly skyrocketed on social media, red is a timeless color and a staple of design. A pop of red serves as the basis of a well-known philosophy rather than just a fleeting trend.
The incorporation of this fierce color into fashion emphasizes the bold, layered aesthetic that defines “frazzled English woman fall.” Adding a red scarf to a black outfit or a red bag to a neutral dress exemplifies this look. Adapting “The Unexpected Red Theory” to clothing lets individuals retain their personal style while integrating a bold, standout element.
But if darker colors are more your vibe, “The Vampire Diaries” has also become a forerunner in fall fashion, inspiring early-2000s layering with a moody palette. This romantic, gothic blend features the intentional layering of jackets, tank tops and various fabrics to create a bold, individualized outfit.
It’s a good thing vampire boyfriends are immortal, because this style is sure to slay.
Beyond clothing, Ann Demeulemeester’s Autumn/Winter 2025 runway highlighted Anthony Turner’s distinct, messy hairstyles. Drawing inspiration from the punk rock movement of the 70s, these hairstyles emphasize embracing your inner chaos this fall.
This styling reflects the artful, intentionally messy look essential for a “frazzled English woman” fall. Loose waves, braids and updos add texture, creating a windswept, effortlessly chic look.
As we develop our personal style and adapt to changing trends, sustainability still remains the number one “in” for the fall 2025 season.
Buying clothes second-hand, reworking last season’s trends into new layered looks or borrowing a pop of red are all ways to stay fashion-forward while reducing overconsumption and waste. When shopping for new pieces, focus on timeless items you’ll love regardless of the season.
Ultimately, the best fashion choice is always what makes you feel most comfortable. Fashion is an art form, and while trends can be fun inspiration, confidence in your own style is the surest way to guarantee a fashion-forward look.
