Still ruling the rinks of the National Hockey League, the Carolina Hurricanes remain undefeated with their 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings.
In their third game away from home, the Carolina Hurricanes (5-0-0) took on the Los Angeles Kings (1-3-2) at Crypto.com Arena. With a game full of goals, the two sides battled for a win. Carolina put away three goals to create a solid lead for themselves in the first 25 minutes. They never anticipated that the Kings would do the same to tie the game 3-3 to send the game into overtime.
The Canes entered this game being the only undefeated team in the NHL. Winning in Anaheim in their face-off against the Ducks, Carolina kept a steady lead and played with great consistency. With two goals from Seth Jarvis and one each from Sebastian Aho and Alexander Nikishin, the Canes eased by with a win. The momentum seemed to carry on into the first period in Los Angeles.
Captain Jordan Stall put Carolina on the scoreboard 12 seconds after puck drop with a slap shot from the right to tuck the puck into the back of the net with help from left winger William Carrier and center Jordan Martinook. At minute four, Staal scored again with the help of two defensemen — Jalen Chatfield and Mike Reilly. A slap shot from right in front of the goal, Staal quickly gave his team a 2-0 advantage.
After the second period began, center Jesperi Kotkaniemi shot the puck from the right into the back of the net in the fourth minute with help from defenseman K’Andre Miller to create a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Carolina would not, however, remain comfortable for long.
Less than a minute later, Kings left winger Trevor Moore scored with assistance from center Phillip Denault and defenseman Joel Edmundson. Moore shot the puck from the left side, through a sea of white, to make it 3-1.
Kings Left winger Andrei Kuzmenko scored with help from two right wingers — Quinton Byfield and Adrian Kemp. At minute 16, Kusmenko shot at a tight angle from the left side and miraculously made it into the right corner of the net.
To tie up the game, left winger Kevin Fiala scored from the right side to tuck the puck just under the left corner of the net with an assist from Kemp in the 11th minute of the third period. With the score locked at 3 apiece, the game went into overtime.
As it has become obvious since the beginning of the season, one specific Carolina player swooped in and saved the day.
Less than halfway into overtime playing 3-on-3, center Seth Jarvis closed out the game with assists from his fellow center Sebastian Aho and defenseman Miller. Using the chemistry Aho and Jarvis have developed, Aho passed the puck through a sea of black straight to Jarvis for a shot straight in the bottom left corner of the net — sealing the victory and keeping the Canes undefeated.
Carolina will travel to the entertainment capital of the world to face the Las Vegas Golden Knights Oct. 20. Puck drop is set for 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
