The N.C. State wrestling team brought a 22-16 victory back to Raleigh from Boiling Springs this weekend after taking down the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in Paul Porter Arena.
Leading 5-1 in his match, junior Joe DeAngelo got the Wolfpack started in the 125-pound class by recording a fall against Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Ziegler in the second period.
Freshman Sam Speno came up big for the Pack at 133, taking a 6-5 victory. He trailed 5-4 entering the third period before taking the win with a takedown.
Another freshman, Tyler Hunt, had an impressive comeback in his match at 141. Opponent Davante Andujar took a 5-0 lead early, but Hunt fought back to tie it at 6-6 by the end of the first period. He then took control of the match, taking a 12-6 second period lead before recording a fall at the 4:56 mark.
Thomas Gantt, a 149-pound junior, took a 19-8 win against Ryan Medved. Gantt won his match by major decision as he was unable to get the fall, despite recording several takedowns.
At this point in the meet, the Bulldogs trailed 19-0. But Gardner-Webb was not ready to cave in to the Wolfpack.
Junior Matt Nereim suffered the first loss of the day for the Pack, losing an 11-2 decision to Alex Medved in the 157-pound class.
Afterward, State junior Nigel Jones bounced back for the Pack and took a 7-2 win against Justin Guthrie at 165. This would be the last win of the day for NCSU, but it would be enough to claim the victory.
The Wolfpack dropped its final four matches in the 174, 184, 197 and 285-pound weight classes.
N.C. State moves to 3-0 on the season and will have its first home duals match of the season against American University Friday at 7 p.m.
