Kevin Howell, current chief external affairs officer at UNC Health and former vice chancellor at NC State, is rumored to succeed Randy Woodson as the University’s next chancellor based on multiple anonymous sources, according to Cory Smith of 247 Sports.
Technician has been unable to independently verify these reports.
University spokesman Mick Kulikowski said in an email to Technician that the University has not yet provided an official notification regarding the appointment of a new chancellor.
“NC State remains committed to keeping the university informed and will provide an update once new information is available,” Kulikowski said.
Howell served as the assistant to the chancellor for external affairs from 2006 to 2016 before being elected vice chancellor for external affairs, partnerships and economic development in 2018. He also served as the vice president for external affairs for the UNC System from 2016 to 2018.
Howell graduated from NC State in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, where he served as the University’s first Black student body president from 1987 to 1988. He later attended UNC-Chapel Hill for his Juris Doctor.
He would be the first NC State graduate in the role since Larry Monteith from 1989 to 1998, and only the third to ever lead the University.
Howell’s previous experience with NC State and the UNC System has focused on counsel for state policy developments and interaction with the state legislature.
Howell is the former director for government affairs at the North Carolina Bar Association. He is also a current advisory board member for NC State’s Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.
