The NC State women’s soccer team was defeated 3-2 on the road by Miami in double overtime Sunday afternoon, marking its fifth ACC loss of the 2015 season.
The Hurricanes (5-8-0, 2-4-0 ACC) entered Sunday’s match off of a 1-0 loss against Duke Thursday night in Florida. Similarly, the Wolfpack (4-10-0, 0-5-0 ACC) entered the match having lost to No. 2 Florida State Thursday night in Tallahassee.
The defending National Champions defeated the Wolfpack 4-0 Thursday night despite incredible efforts from freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten. Already ahead by two, the Seminoles were awarded a penalty kick opportunity in the 41st minute that was saved by Wootten, the first penalty save of her career. Florida State added two more goals to the scoreboard by the end of the game, upping its winning streak to three.
The Pack, now on a six-game losing streak, scored its only two goals Sunday afternoon in the first 30 minutes of action against the Hurricanes. Those two goals were answered in the second half, forcing the game into overtime.
NC State redshirt sophomore forward Jackie Stengel beat the Hurricanes goalkeeper one-on-one to give the Wolfpack an early advantage in the fourth minute, the team’s first goal since Sept. 16.
Stengel turned provider on the second goal, sending a perfectly weighted through ball to junior forward Rachel Cox, who smashed a shot past the Miami goalkeeper in the 30th minute.
Both teams recorded seven shots in the first half, but the Pack held a 2-0 advantage on the scoresheet.
After halftime, however, the Pack collapsed. The Hurricanes scored their first goal in the 51st minute through junior forward Gracie Lachowecki, her sixth goal of the season.
A cross from senior midfielder/defender Natalie Moik found Lachowecki with the ball at her feet in front of an open net, and she made no mistake from a few yards out.
Seven minutes later, Lachowecki scored another goal when she finished a rebound from a shot by senior forward Jasmine Paterson.
The two teams finished regulation knotted at 2-2, but in the second period of extra time, Lachowecki completed her hat trick, sliding the ball past Wootten and breaking the hearts of the Wolfpack team with just a minute remaining in the game.
NC State will travel to Syracuse Sunday to take on the Orange before returning to Raleigh for the first of its three-game home stand, hosting No. 7 Clemson Oct. 22, Louisville Oct. 25 and No. 3 Virginia Oct. 28.
