When Kathryn Bowen opened her mouth and began to sing at the Pack Idol auditions, the words that flowed out were not in English.
Bowen, a junior in psychology, sang an Italian melody by the name of “Amarilla Mia Bella,” in a language the judges had not heard in the competition.
She said she was trained as a classical singer, after her parents paid for her vocal lessons as a 16th birthday present.
“I really enjoy classical types of music,” she said.
But tonight when Bowen sings in the final round of Pack Idol in Stewart Theatre, she’ll be singing something a bit more modern — “Heard it Through the Grapevine” by Gladys Knight. She said she chose the song because she thought it would be a challenge.
Bowen is one of 10 finalists in the singing competition, one that is sponsored by the Collaborative Greek Council to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the second year of the event’s existence, according to Edward Cassel, vice president of CGC.
Cassel, a senior in history, said the audience and three judges will vote to determine tonight’s winner.
“We decided on a prize — an iPod video — and we have more prizes to give the other contestants,” he said.
Paulina Jahja, a freshman in communication, will be also perform tonight — although she will be singing without her sister, with whom she auditioned.
Her sister Davina, a junior in biological sciences, is sick and cannot perform, which Paulina said is a “bummer.”
“I wanted to do it with her, that’s why I did it in the first place,” she said.
But Davina will be there to support Paulina as she sings “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.
For other rounds of the competition, Paulina said the duo used the Internet for inspiration.
“We just looked around on [Youtube] to see if we could see any songs that we liked,” she said. “We just picked a couple of songs, and the one we picked [for an earlier audition], ‘If You Believe,’ has a really great message and a wonderful tune.”
Now, as Paulina goes solo, she said she didn’t change the way she plans to perform.
