Campus Police arrested a man as he was breaking into a vehicle in the Partners Way Parking Deck March 20, according to Capt. Jon Barnwell.
Sang Youp Lee was charged with two counts of breaking and entering and one count of possessing burglary tools, and Barnwell said police had been monitoring the parking deck because of numerous car break-ins.
“We assigned some folks to a task force, and allowed them to be in plain clothes,” he said. “We looked at the time frames, the dates and locations of where we were being hit with [thefts].”
An officer in plain clothes arrested Lee at 2:01 p.m. Thursday. During surveillance periods the suspect had been seen looking into windows of parked cars, according to the police report.
Lee had located a vehicle with an aftermarket stereo system and broken the passenger side window, the report said.
There are additional breaking-and-entering cases that police may link Lee to as well, Barnwell said.
“It would be safe to say that additional charges could be forthcoming,” he said.
According to Barnwell, Lee was targeting vehicles that had items of value inside, particularly aftermarket stereo systems and GPS systems.
“People are getting smart, taking their GPS systems [out of visibility], but leaving the holder stuck on the windshield,” Barnwell said. “It’s important that when students are taking GPS systems out, they’re taking out the holder as well.”
Students need to make sure they are not leaving portable items of value in their cars, Barnwell said, and those with aftermarket stereos need to be especially cautious.
