Mattresses, rugs and electronics were strewn across the balcony outside Lee Hall Wednesday after an emergency sprinkler flooded Suite 201 Tuesday night.
Students were throwing a basketball in their room, Campus Police Captain Jon Barnwell said, and the ball knocked off an emergency sprinkler, causing hundreds of gallons of water to flow into the suite.
Benjamin Watts, a junior in biological sciences who lives in the suite, said he was unsure of the extent of the damages.
“Some electronics were lost,” he said.
Staff from Housing had been working all day Wednesday to clean up the suite and disinfect it so that its residents could return, and Watts said all but the room where the sprinkler erupted were safe to sleep in Wednesday night.
The status of their suite had changed drastically from the night before, according to Watts.
Even after the fire department and Housing staff had cleaned up some of the water, “there was still about an inch” of standing water on the suite’s floor, he said.
Watts said the students living in the most damaged room are expected to return in about a week.
